Description

PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback.   We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. TOP COPY! STILL IN ORIGINAL FACTORY SHRINK WRAPPER with both the original printed inner sleeve and song lyrics insert ... a rare complete album, harder to find than you may think!

Original 1971 first pressing vinyl on the old Dandelion label ... with a her distinctively deep and somewhat melancholy voice, "Songs For THe Gentle Man" is Bridget St. John's second album, and decidedly one of the very best female singer/songwriter works of the early 1970s boom.

On her second album, Bridget St. John expanded her arrangements from the acoustic guitar of her previous effort considerably, with the aid of producer Ron Geesin. While these took the risks of sometimes bathing the songs with added cellos, flutes, violins, and appealing instrumentations as such, that added a welcome spice to her sound on her first album. The songs, too, were a little more playful and melodically interesting, though they retained the reserved, even-tempered pastoralism of her prior work. She still sounds like a challenge to raise either a smile or a frown out of most of the time, like a hermit determined to stay out of the city at all costs. It's pleasant if not penetrating rainy-day folk/Baroque, breaking out of that mood with "Seagull-Sunday" and Donovan's "The Pebble and the Man". She never sounded more like Nico than she did on closer, "It Seems Very Strange," with its doom-struck harmonium.

Overall, in tone, Songs for the Gentle Man is distinctly quiet and blurry owing to the extensive use of the backing arrangements which is used to amazing effect on the mesmerising opening two songs "A Day A Way" and "City Crazy", describing how people wanted to get away from the hectic life of urban Europe. The everyday tone of the lyrics adds greatly to the songs by making communication with the aware listener very easy.

"Early Morning Song" and "Back to Stay", the next two tracks, are still quieter yet, but they are  dreamy and beautiful and catch on in a strange manner, whilst the dramatic "Seagull Sunday" is a wonderful combination of dynamics with pure serenity. Later on the album, "Downderry Daze" and  "It Seems Very Strange" take the hazy tone already established to a further dimension that must be called enchanting. "If You'd Been There" and "Making Losing Better" are equally good with the less layered tone of the album's first few songs, and on the latter track it is amazing how Bridget can sing so softly - it must be a great deal harder than screaming.
