JOHN LENNON & YOKO ONO
LIFE WITH THE LIONS
\ UK - ZAPPLE RECORDS - ZAPPLE ST 3357
TOP COPY M- COVER and...M- RECORD...'69 ORIGINAL
RARE!!! 1969 first pressing on the short lived ZAPPLE Label, titled "Unfinished Music No.2: Life With The Lions" which was released by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969, and the successor to 1968's highly controversial Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins. The title parodies the BBC radio drama "Life with the Lyon," which had been a favourite of Lennon's.
The album opens with an extended and improvised recording titled "Cambridge 1969", recorded on 2 March at Cambridge University, before a live audience. The piece consists of Yoko Ono's vocalisations accompanied by electric guitar feedback from John Lennon. Give Yoko some respect for being able to scream for twenty-five solid minutes, while John pumps out feedback behind her, thinking "Not much fun to be screamed at, is it?" This comprises the first half of Unfinished Music #2: Life With the Lions. Whereas Two Virgins seemed a strange but ultimately innocuous fun, it's follow-up is something altogether more sinister.
Yoko Ono was the only person in John Lennon's life who was ever able to show him how to make Beatledom a plaything instead of a prison. She gave him the ability to lash out against his audience, and still be able to enjoy their adulation. Yoko, having no investment in making rock music fans happy, deflected the brunt of their disdain onto herself, giving John greater control over his interactions with the public. By this measure, it's little wonder that he had such tremendous love and respect for her.
If side one of the LP shows a disdain for the audience, side two shows that disdain for everything else in the world. The nonchalant recital of press clippings in "No Bed for Beatle John" minimizes the press that hounded them, while "Radio Play" minimizes the medium that brought the Beatles' music to worldwide attention.
It also seems a crass response to the loss resulting from Yoko's miscarriage. After hearing the doomed heartbeat for five minutes, and observing "Two Minutes Silence", it's downright cruel that it's followed by something as mundane as playing with a radio. Certainly John Lennon II deserved better.
This collection has all the angst of John Lennon Plastic Ono Band, but none of the raw emotional honesty that made it work. Life With the Lions is the most distant, cold slab of vinyl ever pressed. An enraged reaction to the downside of superstardom. It is Lennon's "God" acted out for forty-five minutes. It not only screams, it screams "It's John and Yoko against the world, and we hate you!" Perhaps the reason they fought so hard for world peace was that they seemed to feel so little peace on a personal level
