ORIGINAL 1968 first pressing of the little seen second album by the Left Banke ...a gorgeous display of memorable highly crafted poprock/garage gems, very infectious on the mind, growing with each play ...
Despite the departure of teenage 'genius' harpsichord maestro Mike Brown (who does contribute on this album) and a 20 month gap, this is fully the equal of the debut album and identical in style. It's actually more cohesive overall with fewer weak tracks. The two albums work together beautifully and make an essential companion to the Walk Away Renee album. With Mike Brown contributing, included is arguably the most infectious Left Banke tune ever (well, next to Walk Away Renee & Pretty Ballerina) the hit single "Desiree." Also his finely crafted song "In The Morning Light" with it's amazing piano solo is a standout track. The song would have fit in perfectly on the Beatles' "Revolver" album.
Tom Feher is the main songwriter who handily contributes after Mike Brown left (or was asked to leave, depending on who is telling the story) the band during these sessions. Feher had always been an unseen contributing member of the band, having co-written quite a few songs on the successful first album. Feher's "Sing Little Bird Sing" might even be a better tune than Paul McCartney's "Blackbird" in the "odes to feathered friends" stakes. Sung like an angel by Steve Martin, the melody is upliftng and beautiful as are the string arrangements. Feher also wrote the song "Bryant Hotel", sung by drummer George Cameron in a nasal Beatle-esque voice, with obvious backing vocals by a then unknown Steven Tyler (later Aerosmith fame) The song details, in a tragi-comic way, the delapidated hotel where the band resided in the late 1960s. Bass player Tom Finn weighs in with a couple of fine tunes as a songwriter with his "Dark Is The Bark" , and My Friend Today" , which have nice shuffling rhythms, and both Finn songs paint a rather depressing landscape of life. Still very good songs. Sort of, if you can imagine Brian Wilson writing a song while he's on heroin, about life in New York City. That is the mood of despair portrayed in these two songs, musically and lyrically.Left Banke TOO finds the band still riding a high from their first album and it works well enough here.
After this album the band sadly floundered and vanished. It's a pity as they had so much promise.

The vinyl ...all glossy both sides; VG++ with some soft scuff lines that look worse than they are, fairly harmless except for visual ...playing excellent = enjoyable.
