MONO original 1968 first pressing "PROMO" D.J. copy!

          THE GROWING CONCERN

...USA - Mainstream Records - 6108 - MONO

Original, yes, ORIGINAL of this highly sought vinyl garage psychedelic relic from 1968 featuring a terrific blend of outstanding self penned melodic tunes spiced up in a trippy mix of guitar, organ & two femal vocals with lovely voices that compliment the tunes nicely...a real woven mix of garage psych perfection all through both sides...no wonder why you never (well almost never) see the original, and you can go from East Coast to West Coast and all around with no luck finding this one. Well, here's a copy that will serve as a decent play copy, and does sound vibrant in it's first pressing form (check condition details after song titles below)

This is a rare MONO "promo" issue...By 1968 mono records had all but disappeared from production...so the mix offers the big bold monaural punch in the sound prouction...different sound from the stereo issue.

Although formed primarily as a blues label, Mainstream Records released a number of interesting psychedelic albums in the late 60s. Some of the better of these include Bohemian Vendetta, The Jelly Bean Bandits, Orient Express, and The Growing Concern.

Although virtually nothing is known of the Growing Concern, their only album is an enjoyable piece of West Coast garage psychedelic, somewhere in the Music Emporium vein including a decidedly sunny pop edge veneer over the lively and very 'heady' garagey-psych sounds. The opening track “Hard, Hard Year” is perhaps the best on the album but that's arguable since all tracks are relatively in the same (top quality) bag. The song opens with some melodic guitar work, which is joined first by bass, and second by some excellent keyboards. The song also featured beautiful female vocal harmonies from group members Bonnie MacDonald and Mary Garstki.

This song largely set the style for the remainder of the album. “Edge of Time” featured some excellent lead guitar work, as did “Tomorrow Has Been Cancelled.” “A Boy I Once Knew Well” was a folky lament which again featured fine vocal harmonies, keyboards, and guitar work. The group’s version of “Mister You’re a Better Man than I” was done in a similar style, and is an interesting take on the Yardbirds original. The group also covered Steve Stills’s “Sit Down, I Think I Love You, based on the Buffalo Springfield original rather than the more baroque hit version by The Mojo Men. The entire album is characterized by fine male and female vocal harmonies, excellent keyboard playing, and fine guitar leads & rhythm structures. Overall, The Growing Concern album is an outstanding blend of garage-psychedelic sixties at it's finest!

CONDITION: The cover is in relatively good shape, no split seams, no bends, little bit of wear, hard to see faded name, mono sticker on front, otherise still very strong & stiff. Back cover with a "D.J. NOT FOR SALE" stamp above group photo and slight aged look but not bad at all...

The vinyl: here is the hard part...Visual the album is but VG with lots of little scuffs & marks but nothing too extreme as the record plays exceptionally well considering. Must be wonder vinyl. we play graded it, really enjoyed it - a great 'lost' Lp, has a few little clicks and little pops here and there, bit of low grade suface in quiet parts, but plays way better than you might expect. Much of the LP is VG+/VG++ and better...so expect a visually lightly marked record that plays highky vibrant & enjoyable without (no) dreaded groove wear!

Used a record cleaner wet vacume (VPI) on the vinyl to enhance the sound quality and removed any dust/dirt in grooves...

keeper!

A  GREAT ADDITION  TO ANYONE'S COLLECTIBLES!
