We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. One of the TOP LEVEL garage/psych albums - ever! ... stacks up to greats like C.A. Quintet, Rising Storm - etc. when talking winning original material ... This quite rare holy grail from 1967, a private press from Detroit, is hailed highly for the reason that song for song, all tracks, on both sides contain killer hooks within the memorable melodies -- the more played the stronger it gets!
Not only has this record gone for nearly four $$$$ figures in world-wide collector circles, but also is one of the few albums that's actually as great as its market value suggests.
With all five members contributing material, the Fredric's "Faces and Phases" is actually quite diverse, much of it exhibiting a weird pseudo-English feel. While tracks such as "The Girl I Love" and "All About Judi" are killer pop-rock perfection, the opener "Federal Reserve Bank Blues" and "Morning Sunshine" sport distinctive psyche influences. Elsewhere, "Taggin'" and "My Yellow Tree" offered up great slice of fuzz guitar-propelled garage rock. Strong melodies, some great harmonies ("Born In Fire") and surprisingly impressive production (particularly for a small label), make for an impressive package.
So overall, a decidedly charming garage offering. Yet for all the bands limitations in ability and recording facilities, this teen-aged quintet rose above the norm with a fine offering of distinctive, all-original killer-rated material. Without question, the Fredric's main strength was in their ability to write strong hooks and implement them via carefully executed, three-part vocal harmonies and moody memorable melodies that grow with repeat spins.
Every song has a melody that sticks, with "The Girl I Love," "Born In Fire" and "Red Pier" being the standouts. As one listens to tracks like those, it's also interesting to note the variety of influences. With airy vocals, baroque-like acoustic guitars and chiming keyboards pervading throughout the album, Phases and Faces sounds mostly like a lost Left Banke offering. However, there are also traces of the Kinks on "Henry Adams" (thematically similar to "Plastic Man" or "David Watts"), the Youngbloods on "Red Pier," and the Tweedy Brothers on "Old Fashioned Guy" (which has the playful feel of "Lazy Livin'"). The only thing that prevents this album from being the best-ever garage LP is the naivete of its creators. For all their songwriting talents, these five Michiganders had tons of talent but would have been well-served by a George Martin-type to round out a Beatles type quality masterful production. Then again, it may very well be the amateurish quirks that give this album its flavor. The flavor, that is, which makes it one of the best garage obscurities that was ever created.
