360 Sound Columbia Records 1967 first pressing!
CHAD AND JEREMY
Of Cabbages And Kings
...USA - Columbia Records - CS 9171 - stereo
Original VINYL first pressing of 1967 popsike "Sgt Pepper-ish" often overlooked gem on the highly collected 360 Sound Columbia Records label of the sixties. Contains the 1967 Columbia Records original inner sleeve!
This was the first of two grossly neglected late 60's albums by Chad and Jeremy (the other of which was the incredibly brilliant "The Ark"). "Of Cabbages And Kings" is eccentric trippy psychedelia firmly entrenched in the "Sgt. Pepper" mold is the best way to describe both albums, and it's hard to say which one is best...but if you know about and loved "the Ark" then trust me,you'll love "of cabbages and kings". The songs "rest in peace" and "the progress suite" have quite the satirical bite, the kind you wouldn't expect from those loveable moptops who brought us the wonderfully romantic "A summer song". It's about time this album was reissued..
if you love "Sgt. Pepper" & its offshoots , you'll love this album!
It wasn’t until 1967’s Of Cabbages and Kings that Chad and Jeremy’s potential was fully explored. The album provided Jeremy Clyde with a larger songwriting role than ever before, and it was the first to fully feature Chad Stuart’s ambitious and indulgent arrangements. Of Cabbages and Kings opens with the brilliantly crafted “Rest in Peace,” a beautifully produced and performed lament for which Chad and Jeremy clearly explored their whole bag of tricks. The song is full of effects, exotic instruments, and small touches which really make it something special. “Rest in Peace” plays for a full 6:50, not one second of which is wasted. After hearing this song, one would naturally assume that the rest of the album couldn’t possibly live up to the promise of its opening cut. However, this isn’t quite right. The rest of side one of the original album is quite pleasant on its own. Lovely songs like “The Gentle Cold of Dawn,” “I’ll Get Around to It When and if I Can,” and the frankly critical “Family Way” make for great listening. On side two of this original LP however, the pace changes somewhat. This entire side of the original album is made up of the (in)famous “Progress Suite.” a conceptual and largely instrumental piece presumably meant as a showcase for Chad Stuart’s ambitious arrangements. Though many have harshly criticized this half of Cabbages and Kings, others have enthusiastically sung its praises. One can see both of their arguments and “Progress Suite” is interesting. Chad Stuart’s arrangements and Gary Usher’s production are truly impressive, although one could question if these elements are enough to pull the whole thing off. Although the whole of the “Progress Suite” is not engaging, it probably features enough ingredients to make it enjoyable on the whole. As with most ambitious ventures, the “Progress Suite” is neither a bitter failure nor a glorious victory. Of Cabbages and Kings is what it is, and instead of criticizing for what it could have been, it’s probably more productive simply to recognize all the good that it is.
Of Cabbages and Kings is one of the best kept secrets of the psychedelic sixties era. The year was 1967 and every band had to step up to plate and come up with a album that could compete with Sgt Pepper. These guys came up with one of the best and most cohesive concept albums of the era!!!! Any fan of Chad and Jeremy and/or late 60's psychedelia should find this album a lost gem.
