Born in England but raised in the U.S., Sully studied with Gilbert Stuart in Boston. During a stay in England he was influ- enced by the work of Benjamin West and Thomas Lawrence. The self-composed, poised subject of "Lady with a Harp" was all of 15 when she posed for Sully.
