Description

I must say I had never seen or heard of this terrific and super-rare record before finding it in a street market a few years back. Even Google information about it is sketchy.

Presenting "Saturday Night At The Uptown" featuring some of the earliest stars of the legendary Atlantic Label caught in concert at the Uptown Philadelphia in January 1964.

The eleven live tracks feature Wilson Picket/The Drifters/Patty & The Emblems/The Vibrations/Patti Labelle & Her Bluebells/The Carltons/Barbara Lynn at a packed event hosted by local radio DJ Jimmy Bishop. However the real stars here are the audience - wild, hepped-up and screaming, clapping and singing along to every beat and every lyric. This is a truly LIVE soul album from a fantastic era when the genre was still raw and evolving.

"Saturday Night At The Uptown" has never, as far as I can detect, been re-issued since it's intial release forty four years ago. Other similar discs from the period and catalogue sometimes pop up but this one appears to have completely fallen off the radar.

And this version's in stereo. How many pop or soul LP's were pressed up in stereo in those days? In fact I can't recall seeing another Atlantic album with this unfamiliar blue label complete with "STEREOPHONIC" blazed across it in silver.

This is real treasure for soul historians Atlantic Label completists and all serious music collectors. Oh, and before we forget...it is firstly and foremost great GREAT music.

The album is not even listed in the Record Collector Guide...and yet here it is: A virtually mint British pressing on Atlantic featuring a gathering of the most celebrated - as well as some forgotten artists - ever to be presented by arguably the greatest R&B label of all time.

The vinyl is in truly fantastic shape, absolutely astonishing. Glossy, lush and shining. Only Side Two has anything remotely like a hairline - and then it is just a single one just detectable under a strong light.

The amazing rich blue & silver labels are clean, fresh and so startling to behold. You just don't associate this design with Atlantic Records.

It even comes with a sturdy but delicately designed inner poly-lined bag made just for Atlantic Stereo Records complete with a gorgeous pink script.

The gleaming cover is equally superb. Laminated and in vivid pink it features shots of all the acts with an essay about the evening on the reverse. There are no rips, splits or writing. Along the very edge there are small signs of ageing but I have rarely seen a record/packaging of this age in better shape than this.

This is a genuinely exciting find. Good Luck to all bidders on this magnificent R&B artefact.
