Description
Up for auction is the complete three-volume set (6 records) of AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC edited by HARRY SMITH and released by FOLKWAYS RECORDS & SERVICE CORP., N.Y. They are numbered FP 251 - Volume One - BALLADS; FP 252 - Volume Two - SOCIAL MUSIC (the first record in this volume is labeled DANCES, the second record in this volume is labeled RELIGIOUS); FP 253 - Volume Three - SONGS. I believe this to be the ORIGINAL PRESSING of the set. [If I am incorrect about this, please let me know and I will change the listing.]
If this is indeed the first pressing, I believe it was limited to only 500 copies of the set.
Visual inspection of the records would lead me to conclude that they are in GOOD condition with several light scratches, scuffs and soil but I have been playing them throughout this evening and I am surprised at the remarkable sound quality of the recordings. There is very little distortion--no skips, a few light pops here and there--I believe you will be very pleased with the music. I have not attempted to clear the disks, believing that for an item of this significance, they should remain as found.
The album covers are worn at the extremities and are lightly soiled but, as I hope the photos show, they are quite well-preserved. Note that the name of a previous owner appears at the top of each label. The gilt printing on the spine of each of the covers is generally in very good condition.
Unfortunately the liner notes are not included with the set.
