Description
CasalsFestival
It was conviction rather than convention that drew front desk players includingToscanini’s NBC flautist John Wummer, Philadelphia oboist Marcel Tabuteau,Cleveland bassoonist John Mack and Budapest Quartet member (and Casals'orchestral 'fixer') Alexander Schneider to a remote corner of barely post-warFrance when air travel was still an act of faith. They came to play and recordBach in primitive conditions and the result was one of the classics of thegramophone. The power of the performances does not come from the precision ofthe playing or from the sound quality, and most certainly not frommusicological 'authenticity'. The power comes from what Peter Hill describes asthe 'bedrock of convictions on which their particular 'authenticity' resides'.

I looked at every record and found them in VERY GOOD condition. But I found a few visible scratches andmarks. I played each of the affectedrecords and listened on headphones with the following results:
#4551 has a scratch for a short duration on Eine Kleine Nachtmusic 2ndmovement. Not bad. #4555 Has a mark on it that I found inaudiblewith headphones. #4557 Hasa mark that I found also to be inaudible with the headphones. #4558 has a scratch in the firstmovement, which was barely audible with headphones. #4559has a bad scratch at the very beginning of the record, which affects about thefirst minute. #4562 has a visible scratch on the Archduke that was barely audiblewith headphones.
