Scarce radio station metal acetate

Eine Azetat-Schallplatte ist eine Aluminiumscheibe, die mit einer weichen Lackschicht überzogen wird, in die Rillen geschnitten werden können. Sie wurden für gewöhnlich nur zu Referenzzwecken oder für Radiosender gebraucht, nutzten sich schnell ab und selten wurden mehr als 10 Exemplare hergestellt.

Dieses Azetat hier ist ein wirklich bizarrer Fund: Die Labels sind ungewöhnlich groß (fast 14 Zentimeter) und handbeschriftet. Es ist eine Zusammenstellung von Hits aus den Jahren 1954-58, die für eine ungarische Radiostation angefertigt wurde, vermutlich um 1959-60. Mit dabei ist eine getippte Titelliste, auf der außerdem 24. lemez (= 24. Platte) steht. Die Hülle ist eine (wie damals üblich) braune Papiertasche, aber das Azetat wird tatsächlich in einer modernen, gefütterten Innenhülle aufbewahrt.

Die Platte ist schwer, man sieht im Loch deutlich das Aluminium und riecht den starken Geruch des Nitro-Lacküberzuges. Es sind einige bekannte frühe Titel von Elvis, Little Richard, Ricky Nelson usw. drauf, aber auch eher unbekannte, z.B. Coverversionen von I'm Walkin' (Fats Domino) und Mister Lee (Bobbettes). Interressant auch, daß Diana nicht Paul Anka, sondern Don Costa (dem Produzenten) angerechnet wird!

Das Azetat ist öfter gespielt worden und klingt schon etwas verzerrt, besonders gegen Anfang der Seiten hört man deutliche Hintergrundgeräusche, vereinzelt Sprünge. Gegen Anfang von Seite 2 ist ein tieferer Kratzer.


An acetate record is an aluminium disc coated with a soft layer of nitrocellulose laquer into which grooves can be cut. They were usually made for reference purposes or for radio stations and wore out quickly. Usually, not more than 10 copies of an acetate were produced.

This acetate here is a really scarce find: The labels are extraordinarily big (almost 14 centimeters) and hand-written. It is a compilation of hits from 1954-58, made for an hungarian radio station, probably around 1959-60. Also included is a typed track list, which also says 24. lemez (= 24th record). The original cover is a brown paper sleeve (as it was usual in these days) but the acetate is actually kept in a modern padded inner sleeve.


It is heavy, you can clearly see the aluminium through the center hole and it has this strong smell of nitrocellulose. On it, there's some popular early songs by Elvis, Little Richard, Ricky Nelson etc., but also some weirdos, like coverversions of Fats Domino's I'm Walkin' or the Bobbettes' Mister Lee. Also interesting is the fact that Diana is credited to Don Costa (the producer), rather than to Paul Anka!


The acetate has obviously been played, it sounds a little distorted and there's notable surface noise, especially in the beginning of each side, also a bunch of skips.
