A series of great  classical orchestral and instrumental performances by major conductors, composers and instrumentalists.

Richard Buhlig (1880-1952) was an American-born pupil of Theodor Leschetizky who eventually settled into a teaching career in Southern California that was marked by occasional local performances. His musical interests veered toward intellectually challenging works and new music (the young John Cage, in fact, studied with Buhlig) rather than Romantic virtuoso staples. While Buhlig did not record commercially, he made private recordings of Beethoven's Hammerklavier and Op. 109 sonatas, plus Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue and a Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier 

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op. 109,

The three movements of this sonata are:

I. Vivace ma non troppo / Adagio espressivo, E major, 2/4 time
II. Prestissimo, E minor, 6/8 time
III. Gesangvoll, mit innigster Empfindung. Andante molto cantabile ed espressivo, E major, 3/4 time.

Private recording recorded in his home in Los Angeles and issued in a very limited number on Shellac 78s.

The recordings are of good professional standard with some flaws in the mobile equipment used: The lathe has a slight flutter, the cutter has an unusual equalization, it may be a crystal cutter.

The records are pressed by an unknown manufacturer, the surface is glassy but have developed some blisters which cause some ticks and pops.

Complete on 3x12"  Shellac 78 rpm records NO ALBUM

Condition: UNWORN, shiny and glassy. 1 has some scuffs and a dull spot& patch of light scratching last 1cm, few up to 3 mm closed blisters. Part 2 very clean w only rare tiny bumps Part 3 very clean lightest scuffs, few small closed blisters, Part 4 very clean with a few up to 2mm closed blisters, Part 5 scuffed, with several up to 3 m closed blisters

Plays quiet with clicks. Lightest warp NAP.

Died: January 30, 1952 - Los Angeles, California, USA

The American pianist an teacher, Richard Buhlig [Bühlig], was born in Chicago of German parents and received his early training there. In 1897 he moved to Vienna to study under Teodor Leszetycki. He completed his studies in 1900.

Richard Buhlig gave his first public concert in 1901 in Berlin, and toured extensively in Europe until late 1906. The next year he made his first mature American debut, with the Philadelphia Orchestra in New York City on November 5, 1907. In 1918 Buhlig joined the staff of the Juilliard School (then called "Institute of Musical Art") in New York as a piano teacher. He gave recitals of L.v. Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Frédéric Chopin, Schubert and Robert Schumann (with emphasis on L.v. Beethoven). However, he soon left the position and went to Europe again. Some years later he returned to the USA and settled in Los Angeles, dividing his time between teaching and performing.

As a pianist, Richard Buhlig was highly regarded for his performances of J.S. Bach (particularly the two piano transcription of The Art of Fugue (BWV 1080) he made and performed), late L.v. Beethoven and J. Brahms. However, much of his repertoire was contemporary or near-contemporary music. He gave the American premiere of Arnold Schoenberg's Op. 11 and performed pieces by other European modernists such as Ferruccio Busoni (his Fantasia Contrappuntistica was dedicated to Buhlig), Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály and Claude Debussy. He also played music by new composers: Ruth Crawford and Adolf Weiss among others. In the 1920’s he began playing Henry Cowell (whom he also taught) and his circle. In early 1930’s Buhlig tutored John Cage: it was he who advised Cage to study with A. Schoenberg. The German pianist Grete Sultan, mentor to Christian Wolff and friend to Cage (whom she had met in 1946 through Buhlig), had studied under Buhlig in early 1900’s - they became lifelong friends, and Buhlig apparently sponsored her immigration to the USA. His students included also Henry Cowell, Wesley Kuhnle, Leonard Stein and Peter Hewitt. Buhlig, Kuhnle, and Cowell gave a concert tour of the Soviet Union together in 1928.

Richard Buhlig and Kuhnle's performance of Buhlig's two piano transcription of The Art of the Fugue (BWV 1080) and a solo recording of J.S. Bach's Chromatic Fantasia & Fugue in D minor (BWV 903) and 2 Preludes & Fugues from WTC 2 and two of L.v. Beethoven’s late Piano Sonatas are the only available recordings of his playing.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
