"Five Feet of Swing" was originally issued by the Decca Record Company as an Album (literally) of five 12-inch shellac 78 rpm records. I do believe that the ten sides were recorded as a project. They were recorded around late 1938
Jimmy Dorsey's band is miked more intimately and captured sounding more pulsating than it had been ever before or ever would be again. On "I Cried For You" JD plays a lovely clarinet chorus over a background of soft trumpets with derby hats waved over the bells. A few moments later the derbies are set aside and the trumpets soar. Gosh, it's wonderful.
Ella Fitzgerald takes two outstanding vocals with the Chick Webb band. On "Hallelujah" she really does, as George T. Simon points out, sing like a Harry James trumpet solo.The Casa Loma band's "Drifting Apart" is one of the finest dance recordings of the dance band era. Originally a 1920s rippy-tippy pop song, this four minute arrangement lifts you up, transforms you magically into Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers, propels you to the moon on gossamer wings. With gusto.
The Bob Crosby "South Rampart Street Parade" is the original of one of the hallmarks of the age, complete with fantastic Ray Bauduc drumming, Eddie Miller clarinetting and the whole ensemble epitomizing the art of orchestrated Dixieland.Kay Weber really was pure sweetness, an absolute dish of cream, and a lovely, straight arrow of a girl. She sings "Solitude" with deep sincerity with the Dorsey Brothers. She could be very fun loving on many of her records, but don't look for any hot-cha here. The Dorseys had an all-purpose dance band and they are fine on Glenn Miller's arrangement of "Weary Blues".
This is an expensive album but if you can afford it and cannot find the individual cuts (and the Casa Loma items are hard to run down...but worth your effort.)

Comes in custom heavy duty album which is in Poor condition. The spine is separating, and has been taped in the interior.
