These are classic performances, they have more than enough unique features for collectors and fans of Talich, including a particularly powerful climax to the first movement of the Seventh Symphony, a really exciting finale, and of course the remarkable character of the Czech Philharmonic. In

EXCELLENT  unworn, scuffs, Dirty need cleaning, markings with wax crayon on surface will clean up with mineral spirits, tiny faint scratch start of 6,  Both covers of album detached, spine fell off but is included

,Historical recordings don’t come any better than this. The recording of the G Major Symphony (23 and 28 November 1935) is rife with a kind of sylvan exhilaration, a deep love of landscape. The lithe strings, winds, and horns celebrate the passions of nature with increasingly martial energy; the flute and pizzicato strings which emerge after the mortal storm suggest what Talich’s Pastoral Symphony might have been bequeathed us. The motivic energy is easily a model for Szell; the lyric suavity might have inspired Giulini. The pianissimo Talich elicits from the orchestra in the Adagio, the softness of the tympani part, along with the pregnant pauses, bespeak a dramatist’s sure hand; then lovely flute and violin soli over warbling interior voices precede a veritable paean to life.  Idiomatic use of portamento adds the note of authority to the Adagio and the haunted waltz, Allegretto grazioso. The breadth of the countermelody is no less refined against the exquisite delicacy of the punctuated waltz tempo. The flute part again dominates the myriad colors of the Allegro ma non troppo finale, whose swaggering march plays out in mock-heroic style. Slovak pomp and circumstance become the order of the day, tunes whistling by in motley succession, the strings and horns consistently splendid.  While annotator Tully Potter has reservations about Talich’s 1951 version of the G Major, preferring this Golden Age reading, I am quite content to own both; they thoroughly convince us that Talich’s was a world-class discipline. 

Vßclav Talich (IPA: ['va:tslaf 'tal?x]) (May 28, 1883 û March 16, 1961) was a Czech conductor, violinist and pedagogue.

Born in Kromer??, Moravia, he started his musical career in a student orchestra in Klatovy. From 1897 to 1903 he studied at the conservatory in Prague with Otokar èevc?k. For a short period he was the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, and he was so fascinated by the chief conductor Arthur Nikisch, that he decided to become a conductor himself. His conducting career started in Tbilisi. From 1915 to 1918 he performed as a violist of the Czech Quartet. His career with the Czech Philharmonic started on 30 October 1918 with the poem Zrßn? by Josef Suk. From 1919 to 1941 he became chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, raising them to internationally respected levels and touring widely with them. During World War II, in a very difficult situation, he tried to support Czech culture, but after the war was accused of collaboration with the Germans. However, the accusations were refuted and he started to conduct again in 1946. In 1946, he established the Czech Chamber Orchestra, with students of the Prague Conservatory.

In 1935, he was also appointed chief opera administrator at the Czech National Theatre, where he promoted specially works of LeoÜ Janßcek, whose some works he premiered.[1] He was forced to leave when it was closed by the Germans during World War II, took up the post again after the end of the war, but was fired following disagreements with the government in 1947. He took the post up again shortly thereafter, and was then fired once again in 1948 after the Communist party took over the country.[2] Subsequently, he became conductor of the newly formed Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava. In November 1954, he conducted his last public performance with the Czech Philharmonic. He spent the last years of his life in Beroun, Czechoslovakia. In 1957 he became a National Artist, the highest distinction in Czechoslovakia.

Particularly noted for his interpretations of Czech composers such as Anton?n Dvorßk, Bedrich Smetana and Josef Suk, Talich also did much to bring the operas of LeoÜ Janßcek into the standard repertoire. Talich also taught a good deal, with Charles Mackerras, Karel Ancerl or Milan Munclinger among his pupils.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.
