Description
This wonderful and historic piece is a rarely-seen original 1930 16" 33rpm Vitaphone disc containing the synchronised dialogue and sound effects to Reel 2 of Episode 4 of "Voice From The Sky", the first all-sound serial in cinema history. Despite the ambition of the project, and considerable newspaper coverage at the time, the film reportedly had only a very limited release, not least because of the lack of movie houses able to play synchronised Vitaphone soundtrack discs. Director Ben Wilson died a short time after the film's release.
The label is stamped with the disc number 1454-2, and the episode and reel number are marked in pen. The "Times Played" boxes have not been marked.
A line in the dead wax closest to the label has a line at right angles to the grooves, showing the projectionist where to find the exact start of the audio.
Important note for casual browsers: this record will not play on a standard turntable: it is four inches wider in diameter than a regular LP, and play starts from the INSIDE edge of the grooves. A specialist turntable is required to play these Vitaphone discs, so unless you have such equipment or are interested in this record simply as an artefact of historical importance, to avoid disappointment, please don't bid!

The reverse side of the record is blank, and it is housed in what might well be its original brown sleeve stamped with the words "Store flat to avoid warp". This sleeve is very tatty and is split away at two of the seams, so I have further enclosed the disc in a later 16" plain brown sleeve, which has been repaired with tape and is in much better condition.
For transit, it will be carefully sealed between two layers of card, and then placed within layers of protective material within an outer cardboard box.
