I am currently selling a series of great Richard Wagner and classic European 78 rpm orchestral recordings on all the great European labels:

OTTO GORITZ, famous German Baritone, and Wagnerian Singer at the MET  pre WW I

Here in one of his rare EDISON records:

The tensions brought about by WWI ended many German Singers' Met career in 1917. Accompanist, Frank La Forge later described a party at her home during which the German baritone, Otto Goritz sang a parody celebrating the 1915 sinking of the British passenger ship Lusitania by a German submarine. There were more than 100 Americans aboard. It hardly helped when this incident was publicized, but even without that controversy, anti-German feelings were running high. It was not until 1920 that Wagner was again performed at the Met, and another year before the operas were once again sung in German. Although La Forge never again played for Gadski after that party, he later described her as being considered "the greatest Wagnerian soprano the world had produced."

Goritz, Otto, Bariton, * 8.6.1873 Berlin, å 11.4.1929 Hamburg; er erhielt seine Ausbildung durch seine Mutter, die S?ngerin Olga Nielitz, in Bremen, wo er seine Jugend verlebte. Nachdem er zun?chst als Schauspieler 1888-90 am Stadttheater von Bremen und 1892-93 am Stadttheater von Aachen aufgetreten war, deb?tierte er als Operns?nger 1895 am Hoftheater von Neustrelitz, an dem er bis 1899 im Engagement blieb. 1899-1901 sang er dann am Opernhaus von Breslau, 1901-03 am Stadttheater (Opernhaus) von Hamburg. W?hrend seines Hamburger Engagements sang er dort u.a. den Vater in der Premiere von Charpentiers ?Louise½, 1903 in der Urauff?hrung der Oper ?Der zerbrochene Krug½ von Josef Jarno. 1903 gastierte er an der Wiener Hofoper. 1903 folgte er einem Ruf an die Metropolitan Oper New York (Antrittsrolle: Klingsor in der von Bayreuth untersagten amerikanischen Erstauff?hrung des ?Parsifal½), an der er eine sehr erfolgreiche Karriere, namentlich im Wagner-Fach, hatte. Als seine gro?en Partien galten hier der Beckmesser in den ?Meistersingern½ und der Alberich im Nibelungenring, wobei auch seine eminente darstellerische Begabung bewundert wurde. 1905 wirkte er an der Metropolitan Oper in den Premieren der ?Fledermaus½ und von ?H?nsel und Gretel½ von Humperdinck mit. Am 28.12.1910 sang er dort in der Urauff?hrung der M?rchenoper ?K÷nigskinder½ von Humperdinck den Spielmann. 1913 kreierte er f?r Amerika den Ochs im ?Rosenkavalier½ von Richard Strauss, 1916 sang er an der Metropolitan Oper in der Premiere der Oper ?Der Widerspenstigen Z?hmung½ von H. Goetz. Beim Eintritt der USA in den Ersten Weltkrieg mu?te er seine Karriere an der Metropolitan Oper aufgeben, an der er in 14 Spielzeiten 23 Partien in 405 Vorstellungen (in deren New Yorker Haus) gesungen hatte. Er wurde als Angeh÷riger eines feindlichen Landes in ein Internierungslager eingewiesen. Er versuchte nach Kriegsende nochmals in den USA aufzutreten; dies scheiterte jedoch an Demonstrationen gegen ihn als Deutschen. Entt?uscht verlie? er Nordamerika und ist nie mehr nach dort zur?ckgekehrt. In Deutschland sang er jetzt 1920-21 wieder in Hamburg, 1922-25 an der Gro?en Volksoper Berlin, wo er 1922 in der Premiere des ?Boris Godunow½ als Warlaam zu h÷ren war. Bei den Festspielen in der Waldoper von Zoppot, wo er bereits 1912 den Kezal in der ?Verkauften Braut½ gesungen hatte, wirkte er 1914 als Kaspar im ?Freisch?tz½, 1921 als Pizarro im ?Fidelio½ mit. Aus seinem Repertoire f?r die B?hne sind noch der Papageno in der ?Zauberfl÷te½, der van Bett in ?Zar und Zimmermann½ und der Baculus im ?Wildsch?tz½ von Lortzing sowie der Lampe in ?Versiegelt½ von Leo Blech nachzutragen. Er war verheiratet mit der Schauspielerin Emma Rah?, die zuerst in Hamburg, dann mit ihm zusammen in Neustrelitz engagiert gewesen war.

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects, like cracks, chips and scratches, are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a given pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
