Rooy , Anton van , baritone * 01.01.1870 Rotterdam, † 28.11.1932 Munich; actually Antonius Josephus Maria van Rooy . He first worked in a commercial occupation , then studied at Julius Stockhausen in Frankfurt aM and entered since 1894 as a concert and oratorio singer . However, Felix von Weingartner and Cosima Wagner led him to the stage singing, and in particular the Wagner repertoire turn . At the Bayreuth Festival of 1897 , the artist then made ??his debut as Wotan in the Ring cycle and had an overwhelming success . Cosima Wagner is said to have commented on his Bayreuth debut with the words: " The Master would have had to hear " At a stroke, he was regarded as the greatest Wagnerian singers of his vocal holder comes . In addition to its incomparable Wotan he sang in Bayreuth also 1899 , 1901 and 1902 , they admired him in 1899 as Hans Sachs in the " Meistersinger " in 1901 as a Flying Dutchman . In 1898 he joined the first time at the Berlin Court Opera and was then regularly listen to 1914 in the German musical capitals on the stage and in the concert hall. 1898-1913 he was every year on the London Covent Garden as a guest. In 1898 he was appointed professor at the Metropolitan Opera New York ( first role : Wotan in " Die Walküre " ) , whose member he remained until 1908. Here he worked on 12.25.1903 in the forbidden from Bayreuth premiere of "Parsifal" as Amfortas with and could not occur in Bayreuth since then . In 1907 he sang at the Metropolitan Opera in the premiere of the opera "Salome" by Richard Strauss the lokanaan . At the Metropolitan Opera, he has appeared in the New York house during nine seasons in 13 games and 183 performances . In addition to his Wagnerian heroes he sang Escamillo in " Carmen ," the Valentin in "Faust" by Gounod and the King Salomon in Goldmark's "Queen of Sheba " ( 1905) . In 1898 he sang with great success at London's St. James ' Hall Schumann's " Dichterliebe " as he were indeed a highly respected song - interpreter. Guest performances and concerts brought him in Berlin and Munich , Brussels and Amsterdam, Frankfurt aM, in Zurich (1901 ) and Cologne and in many other musical centers of brilliant successes . Since 1909 he was engaged at the Opera of Frankfurt, where he but rarely occurred. Since about 1910 began to subside his voice . He lived after the end of his career in Munich. - The expressiveness and stylish , sensitive nature of his role design has been praised again and again. His Wotan , Hans Sachs and be his Kurvenal set standards for a whole generation of Wagner singers.
