Description

A Gustav Mahler birthday Tribute: July 7th,1860

Yesterday, July 7th marked the 148th anniversary of one of the early 20th Century's iconic compositional voices.

From my years as an Exhibitor in the California based rare books showcase, Bustamante Antiquarian Books 2000-2005, I offer a exceptional and important music history gem.

Offered is a very scarce copy of the 1903 compiled edition of DIE MUSIK, a critical compendium of reviews and analysis of the German musical world of 1903.

Edited by Bernhard Schuster, the unique and creative programming of of operas and presenations by  Gustav Mahler as Musik Director/Conductor of The Vienna Court Opera are well documented.  Note, in the showcase below the reviews re: his Tchaikovsky Opera Festival and a new production of Wagner's Tristan under his baton.

As I noted in a showcase of a rare Carnegie Hall program display ad for a concert Mahler was to conduct in June 1911 in New York, offered during 2003 in my e-store, Mahler's contemporaries were Tchaikovsky,Brahms and Wagner, all of whom were alive and working during his formative conducting years.

Yet, this is but the tip of the iceberg.   Also showcased within are many historic reviews and accounts of Arthur Nikisch with Belgian violin virtuoso, Eugen Ysaye in concert, young Felix Weingartner in one of the earliest performances of Bruckner's Sixth Symphony,a first performance of the new Richard Strauss tone poem, Also Sprach Zarathustra, A 20th Anniversary tribute to Richard Wagner[died 1883], A Tribute to the late Hugo Wolf, Max Fiedler's guest performances with The Imperial Russian Symphony, Brahms friend and protege, Joseph Joachim in performances with his Quartet in the complete Beethoven String Quartet Cycle in Bonn,Hans Richter conducts Der Ring at Convent Garden,A Tribute to English music sensation, Edward Elgar, Frederic Lamond in Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto in Leipzig, Fannie Zeisler Bloomfield in Dresden, the world of Orchestral hall Acoustics.....and much more.

Note, only a very small portion of this amazing and important historical document are sampled.    There are major book and critical writing reviews and previews of new productions, operas and works in progress.

Last but not least, the book is rich in Jugendstil  decorations and illustrations.      In bookdealer's vocabulary, the condition is excellent overall:good boards front and back with tight binding, good gutter hinging, clean with some very lite foxing to cover, as seen in scan.

Truly ...an scholarly and academic gem.......
