We are pleased to present the rarest and hardest-to-find Thirteenth Floor Elevators album in existence: the monstrously rare MONO ACETATE (NOT A MONO WHITE LABEL PROMO OR MONO STOCK PRESSING pressing) of the Thirteenth Floor Elevators legendary, second album. This acetate is a proverbial Loch Ness monster of record collecting: everybody knows that it exists – or has heard of its alleged existence,  but hardly anyone has ever seen, let alone snapped a photo of it. We have a distinct privilege of presenting a GORGEOUS specimen of one such rare , nearly-extinct species here.

Ah, but wait, folks…we are just warming up. You ain’t heard nothing yet!

What makes this acetate so very special and so very unique is its absolutely stunning, (literally) mind-blowing  unique mono mix, which we find to be dramatically different – way better, definitely! – than either the original stock stereo copies or rare promo-only mono mix of the album. Essentially, this is the story: when you play the stock stereo copy of this album (either original vinyl or one of numerous digital versions), you are listening to a fairly light – delightful, yes, but definitely lightweight and trite piece of trippy Texas psychedelia -- great but somewhat deficient in the “meat & bones” department. However, when you play this incredible mono acetate, what you get is a totally different beast altogether. This is a radical, sneering, in-your-face, crunchy piece of Texas garage/punk, more of a marriage between Chocolate Watchband, early Sir Douglas Quintet and Pretty Things than Strawberry Alarm Clock. The difference is so great that we wonder if someone at the record label didn’t deliberately “neuter” Roky Erickson’s original mix in order to make it more palatable to the buying public and render it more commercially viable. We are all but certain that this mix much more accurately reflects Erickson’s vision of what this album was supposed to sound than the final, released version of the album.

The difference in the mixes is dramatic,  mostly in the rhythm section and Erickson’s vocals, both of which are pushed way, way up-and-front-center into the mix. Roky practically growls into your ear, and crunchy guitars and bass are sneering, punchy, pulsating, and extremely loud in the mix. When you play “Slip inside this House”, the feel is more of the Stooges-meet-Bo Diddley than some premeditated piece of sunshine psychedelia or baroque pop. It is, AS IT WAS ORIGINALLY MEANT TO BE HEARD, definitely a nasty, seething with angst and paranoia,’60s garage/punk album, and psychedelic album only as a possible afterthought, if even.  How many times during your lifetime will you get a privilege of hearing the original vision of the great artist, as it was meant to be presented to the world (but, for whatever reason, never was)?

This was the second of the four great, classic psychedelic albums by Rocky Erickson & his Thirteenth Floor Elevators before Erickson was declared criminally insane and hauled off into the psychiatric asylum for a protracted and bizarre "treatment". Frankly, we don't know why - this album still sounds more SANE to us than most of the music of the period. Indeed, it sounds much better than most of the music created since!!! Don't miss this great psych relic, which almost never shows up for sale in ANY condition.

IMPORTANT NOTE: While this acetate is in a beautiful state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible.

This acetate is in about VG++ TO EXCELLENT (just a notch below NEAR MINT) , with some minor and superficial scuffs on the surface. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is  missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.

ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 (where 10 is the best), WE GRADE RECORD AS 6.5 to 7

THIS IS A RESERVE AUCTION!
