I recently acquired thousands of 78rpm records from an estate, and am beginning to list them. So, watch my listings the next few weeks--all kinds of 78s, all kinds.
Also, I offer generous discounts on shipping charges for the mailing of combined mailings of multiple purchases, so keep an eye on my listings. I will be happy to hold a purchase for you in you are interested in a later auction so they can be mailed together. Feel free to contact me for details. I will mail up to 20 records in a single mailing.
NOTE: I never date items by patent date, as some sellers do. That only tells you the date the patent for the design or process was approved. The item may have been made decades later. I use reference books.
I play-grade victrola records and ship them in heavy paper storage sleeves.
This Auction:
This is one of FIVE auctions I'm putting up today featuring 78rpm PICTURE DISCS containing excerpts from some of Franklin Roosevelt's most famous speeches. I am listing them separately for collectors, but anyone buying more than one will pay only 50 cents shipping for each one after the first.
They are made similarly to the "Hit of the Week" recordings, a thin layer of plastic over a thin cardboard center. All five feature two recordings--both sides--and photos of FDR. See pics. I've scanned both sides of the records so you can see all the photos. I did not play these since they are so fragile, but all appear to be playable and in good condition. They are all 8 inches in diameter and were made in 1945.
This auction is for a two-sided recording of FDR giving one of his FIRESIDE CHATS -- this one about Defense, and given December 29, 1940.
There is some minor edge damage and the beginnings of flaking, but only at the very edge. Should play and sound VG.

SHIPPING AND HANDLING Back to Top SHIPPING COSTS: Please note that my shipping costs are more than just postage fees I have to pay. A package that mails for $3.25 may actually cost me $6.50 to put in the mail. There are packaging costs such as boxes, packing, tape, and labeling. There are also Final Value FEES charged by both ebay and paypal on shipping costs. These are fees they charge in addition to those for the purchase itself. There are final value fees for the purchase, final value fees for shipping costs, and collection fees for taking your payment at PayPal. If you want a breakdown on all the costs involved on shipping fees for any item please feel free to contact me. I DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA. All shipments will be made to the address on your PayPal account. It is your responsibility to have a current address on file. I will COMBINE PURCHASES for a cost savings on shipping to buyers in North America, but all purchases you want combined for a savings must be within a ten day period. After that they must be mailed separately. I'll hold an invoice for only those ten days then payment will be due on all purchases within that ten day period. Media mail is the most common method for records and books. But, any purchase can be sent Priority or other delivery methods. Just ask for a quote. For some record lots I may be able to use USPS Flat Rate Priority boxes, so check with me for details if you want to use that service. HANDLING TIME: Ebay now wants all sellers to ship within 1 business day. Note this: since I often list items on weekends, your purchase will be mailed on the next BUSINESS day the post office is working. This may be a Tuesday since they are often closed on Mondays for holidays. CANADIAN BUYERS READ: The USPS now allows only Airmail delivery to destinations outside the U.S. No surface mail. Check with me for details and rates before bidding. Shipments to Canada would be by First Class International if the item is under four pounds, or Priority Airmail if it is heavier. My costs are much higher than just postage differences since the postal carrier won't pick them up. I have to make a trip to the post office, so the costs include gasoline and time spent filling out forms and standing in line at the post office for international mailings.
RETURN/REFUND POLICY Back to Top If you have a problem with any items you receive from me, please contact me right away. I'll always work with reasonable people for a satisfactory resolution. NOTE: although I accept returns, understand that there is a current problem on ebay of people buying items and then returning substituted, broken, or inferior duplicates in place of the ones they bought and asking for a refund. I'm hearing more and more stories about this from other sellers. So, I now take high resolution pictures of all the items I sell, and if a buyer returns a substituted item they will be reported to ebay for fradulent behavior. In any case, if you are unhappy with your purchase please contact me BEFORE returning any item. NOTE also, should any item arrive in damaged or broken condition please contact me. I will work out a resolution with you which may include a refund even without a return. It's a case by case situation. But keep in mind, your satisfaction with the transaction is my highest priority.
RECORD GRADING & RECORDING Back to Top RECORD GRADING: For VINYL albums I grade mostly by sight, but play grade most 45s and 78s. I use Jerry Osborne's grading system shown in his "Official Price" Guides. "MINT: Must be absolutely perfect and unplayed. VERY GOOD: A minimum of visual or audible imperfections, which should not detract much from your enjoyment of owning them. GOOD: The item is good enough to fill a gap in your collection until a better copy becomes available. It will show definite signs of wear and tear, but records in good condition should play all the way through without skipping." Grades of "+" or "-" fall in between these categories. A grade of VG- or G+ indicate it's somewhere in between the two levels. A grade of G+ would indicate it is enjoyable with surface noise, and a grade of VG- would mean enjoyable, noticeable surface noise, but not as bad. GENERALLY, I use VG-/G+ to indicate an "average" sounding used record. For 78 RPM RECORD grading I use the same basic formula described above but I accept there will be more surface noise than with vinyl. In general, I judge two things: energy level and clarity of the recording, and surface noise. Therefore, a VG Victrola record will have good energy, clear sound, yet surface noise inherent in that format. The highest grade I give used 78rpm records is VG+ since there will always be surface noise even if it looks unplayed. A Victrola grade G would be enjoyable but have a lot of surface noise, low energy level, or partial distortion. Most 78s fall between G and VG (G, G+, VG-/G+, VG-, VG). NOTE: with ACOUSTIC 78s made before 1930, known as VICTROLA records, they can t be accurately judged by just looking at them. I often find some that look trashed, but when played on a Victrola they sound pretty good. That's why I try to play-grade all of them. I use a Victor Granada Orthophonic player from 1926 with steel needles. To play-grade later 78s made from 1930 to 1959 I use a 1960s three-speed turntable with a ceramic cartridge piped through a professional Gemini mixer and studio grade Alesis monitors. I now buy my steel needles from eBayer cyber_tigger, Walt Sommers. He has the BEST needles I have ever used. Go by his guidelines on how to use them and you'll get the most out of your old windup machine.
FOREIGN SALES Back to Top I DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA. The one exception on foreign sales is dealing with AMERICANS serving our country overseas. Contact me and I will arrange for APO shipments or deliveries to your stateside address.
